Intelligent Instruments
In an effort that parallels the intelligent performance spaces research, intelligent instruments will aim to extend and develop existing instruments and to invent wholly new ones. These instruments will be augmented and defined by computer interactions.

Computer-Augmented Instruments
A computer augmented instrument takes an existing instrument as its base and uses sensors and other instrumentation to glean as much information as possible from the performer's motions. The computer uses both the original sound of the instrument and the feedback from the sensor array to create and/or modify new sounds.

New Interfaces For Performance
A second approach to developing intelligent instruments, is to create wholly new interfaces for performer interaction with computer driven electronics. Again, an array of sensors is used to define the interactions between the human performer and the computer. These research themes will be driven by two initial projects: (1) a CyberOpera, and (2) a new Live Interactive Game.
